Anki Deck: Countries of the World

About this deck

Important Recommendation

If you skip through the description, please at least read this:

There are two card types containing bordering countries (country → bordering countries, vice versa). These card types only make sense to learn, when you comfortable with knowing the countries in the first place.

Until then, I recommend to disable these two card types. In the card browser, sort by card type, mark them and pause them.

Overview

There are currently about 200 countries in the world. The number depends on the view. Generally, a country is a country when it gets recognized by other countries. So, for example, the west thinks of Taiwan as a country while China does not. Also, UN membership is a big part in being recognized as a country internationally.

All entities that were given a unique ISO code (e. g. CA for Canada) are included in this deck. This also covers dependencies (e. g. the Falkland Islands which belong to the UK). I do not want this deck to be political. Disputed areas and countries are marked according to Wikipedia and the Natural Earth geo dataset.

Nota bene:

  • Island countries and outlying islands are highlighted by a light blue outline. These do not represent territorial waters! They only serve to make small islands more visible or clearly mark them as beloning to the country in question if other countries are nearby.
  • «Bordering Countries» only regard land borders, not sea borders.

The deck is available in English and German or a combined version.

This deck took me about 150 hours to put together. If you like it, please support me by rating it on Ankiweb.

The deck contains the following fields:

On each answer card, there is a dropdown menu allowing you to display the whole country info. Of course, you can delete card types you don’t like or you can build your own.

These fields are arranged to form the following card types:

Screenshots

Examples for some question cards and one «full info» card. They show the English-German mixed deck. When e. g. the country name matches in both langauges like for «Afghanistan» and «Kabul» only one is shown.

Error Reporting

This deck must be spot on. If you find an error, please use the contact form to write me an email. Thank you!

Known Issues

Two entities are not inclueded (and likely won’t be):

  • Spratly Islands in the south china sea which are disputed between Brunei, China, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam.
  • United States Minor Outlying Islands in the pacific and one island in the caribbean.

Technical:

  • The card design does not render correctly on AnkiWeb. It does however in both apps and on desktop.
